October Kids Sprint Tri Time Adjusted 05 Age Group
Age Group Results

I am just getting to writing this note for the kids race. Please excuse me for being so late
posting these results. While at the race for the kids, my 91 year old mother had to be taken to the hospital and
put into the ICU. She was in there for 3 days and I'm sorry to say, passed away last Thursday. I have been dealing
with that and all the other things that go along with such an event. Once again I am sorry for not getting the
results posted for this race in a more timely manner.
If your child didn't get a tee shirt and was preregistered we have ordered some shirts for them and will send them
out asap. They should be in my hands in the next few weeks. If you were a late registration and would like a
shirt, please email me at: tri20001@msn.com, let me have the racers name, size, address and we will send them a
shirt. Postage for late registration will be covered by our club to hopefully help smooth out the mistakes we
made with the run portion of the race.
Thanks to all the great kids and their parents that came up to the mountains to enjoy our 4th annual
Kids Sprint Triathlon.
I think it is necessary to spend a minute to explain some things that didn't
go exactly right last weekend. While this race was well attended by our young racers we had some problems with
the management of the race. Hopefully you parents that are reading this know the difference between an excuse and
an explanation. Due to a problem with my mothers health, two of my best helpers (my 2 brothers) were not at the
race and I had to ask the parents for some help with the bike and run portion of the race. I try not to ask anyone
for help, but sometimes it just needs to be done. I was very lucky to have 4 parents step up and offer their help.
I thought I was very clear about how I needed to have them direct the kids for the bike and run portions of the
race, but I guess I could have been even more clear as to what I needed them to do. Everything was great until
the run portion of the race where the kids were supposed to be turned around when they got to the end of the park
road. That was to be the turn around point for the kids run, but I neglected to take the "run" sign down
that pointed the runners of the adult international distance triathlon that just finished, to run up the trail
they just biked on.
My Mistake!!!
In making that mistake, the kids were directed by the volunteer parent to run
down the trail instead of turning around and running back to the finish line. Hayley Rae Tillman, who has been
the female winner for the past 3 years finishing last year with the time of 19:01 and would have finished with
an 18minute and change time this year came back to win again for the 4th time was directed down the trail where
she wound up running all the way to the bike turnaround before coming back. She ran a full 2 mile run and was closely
followed by 3 boys and 1 girl who ran almost as far as she did. As a result, the kids were all over the place,
some running 2 miles, some running 1 3/4 mile and others finally getting turned around at the right place and running
1 mile. Needless to say, there is no fair way to score the kids and have it come out correctly, so we will just
have to do the best we can and go on.
I would like to offer my congratulations to Hayley Tillman for her great attitude
in running the race and following the instructions of the adults that were directing her, even though she knew
she was running way out of the way.
Now let me say that I was proud of all the kids for their fine job and hard work
training for the sport of triathlon at such a young age and I want to offer anyone that ran in the race in 2005
a $10 discount for the 2006 race if they should decide to come back and give us another chance to make up for our
mistakes. There were some kids that came in with some fast times, they knew the course and turned around at the
proper point, even though the parent/volunteer was directing them to turn up the bike trail. They crossed the finish
line first and I want to say how proud we are of them. Our first finisher to cross the line, doing the real race
distance was Samuel Lack. He ran a good race and through no fault of his own didn't get the award for being the
winner of the actual race distance. His time was 24:22; a very respectible race time. Good job to him and all the
racers that ran the proper course and the the kids that ran the longer course that they were mistakenly send down.
I hope you will all find this to be a fair way to assign the award:
I took the 5 kids that ran farther than anyone else, gave them credit for running
an 8 minute mile and deducted that time from their recorded time. In doing this I looked at the times and saw that
if these 5 kids would have done the correct distance, they would have been the winners of the race. So the overall
places would have been the same as they are listed below. The other times for the kids are their actual race times
as recorded as they came across the finish line. There is no doubt that if everyone had run the actual distance
they would have had a faster time than the times shown below. It was totally our mistake that the race times were
not truely the times they would have gotten had they been directed properly.
My special thanks to Danny Levitas for his help in figuring the times and awards
as well as the quick thinking on the course when he wrote down the race numbers of the kids that ran past him before
he had the time to send the rest of the kids back to the finish.
Please except my apology and tell the kids that I hope my mistakes in the timing
of their event won't make them less enthusiastic for the great sport of triathlon.
