Our New Mission

for 2009

Please take a minute to read our new mission for the Great Smoky Mountains Triathlon Club

Tri For The Wells

This morning I was sitting in my office, having my 2 eggs, toast and coffee, listening to my new and favorite show at 9am, the 700 Club.  For those of you that don't know what that is, it's a Christian news and inspirational show for both the believer and non believer.  I find myself going way out of the way to watch everyday and hear all the inspirational stories that they share with the viewers.  Today they were doing a fund raising and showed a story about Heather, a 4 year old girl that was sitting in the living room with her mother.  They were in the process of turning to a cartoon channel for entertainment when they passed by the 700 Club and the little girl said to stop.  They were doing a story about a family that had to walk 5 miles to get to a clean water source.  After listening to the story, the little girl looked at her mother and said that she wanted to help build a well so that family didn't need to walk so far to get drinking water.  I could tell the whole story, but I'll just put a link here (Heather's Story) so you can watch for yourself.

Last year when I was going through my cancer treatment there were so many people that reached out to help me, both people that I knew as well as complete strangers.  I felt so blessed and told the Lord that I wanted to be that kind of a person too.  Well, I am now enjoying good health and feel like it is my time to give back and this is a way for me to get started.

I want to dedicate 10% of all our race entry money to send into the 700 Club to sponsor the building of as many wells as we can build.  Its a small way to give back for all that the Lord has given to me.

So Lets All

One more reminder:

Not all our races are USAT sanctioned, but the $10. one day insurance fee is still included in your registration price and you still have the same kind of insurance offered to you to supplement your personal insurance.  If the race is a sanctioned race and you have a current USAT card with photo ID we will refund $10. at the race site.

All of these races will be posted on the active.com site for you to register as well as our web site where you can fill out the form online, download and mail in.

Name of "The Beast of the East"

Last month I got a letter from the Ironman folks in Florida stating that we could no longer use the name of Ironman on any or our races that were Ironman or Half Ironman distance.   It seems that they have the exclusive right to the name "Ironman" and no one else can use it...... so, we will now be referring our Beast of the East Half Ironman Triathlon as "The Beast of the East Half Ironmon  Triathlon".   That's right..... Ironmon.... We will have a little tilt toward the reggae sound.

Beast of the East Half Ironmon Distance Report

The Beast of the East Half Iron Distance triathlon was a great success and everyone that came to participate had a good time.  We had about 20 people that had signed up for the event that didn't come to race due to the weather report for that weekend.  It predicted cold weather, and there seems to be something about cold weather and a wet swim that put some people off.  As it was; the morning temps were in the 40s, but the lake, according to everyone, was beautiful and fairly warm and the day warmed up to be perfect conditions for a Half Iron distance triathlon.  Results can be seen by clicking on the Race Results button to the left.

The Beast of the East Half Ironman Distance Triathlon

2005

"Two weeks ago I toed the line at the Beast of The East 1/2 IM, located in the mountains North Carolina/ Georgia border:
It was an amazing race put on my the good folks of the Great Smoky Mountains Triathlon Club ( www.gsmtc.com).
It was also the most scenic race I have ever done in my life. I ended up second.
The Beast of the East Spring Tune-up will be the toughest and most beautiful course you'll ever do.

If your a true Ironman or woman, this is the race and the course that will prove it.
We thank you for your continued interest in our races and hope to see you here in the Western North Carolina and North Georgia Mountains this year.

Our Race & Refund Policy
We try to think of ourselves as a very racer friendly club that wants to work with you as much as possible.  There are many clubs that have a no refund policy, but we want to let you know that if you sign up for a race and can't make it, we offer a race entry to any of our other races during that calendar year You must let us know by email at least 2 weeks before the race,  that you don't intend to attend the race you signed up for... the reason you can't come and the race you would like to transfer to.
If the new race costs more money than the one you couldn't attend, the difference must be paid at the registration table before the start of the race.
You will also need to bring a copy of the email to the new race and present it at the registration table.
We do not offer this to racers on race day.
The Great Smoky Mountain Triathlon Club reserves the right to cancel or change any race dates or distances as it seem necessary.  We will always try to give you the racer several days or longer to make any necessary changes in your plans.
We hope this helps....
